Wellness [Recovery]

Recovery is a term used widely in areas other than the addiction field, such as “I’m recovering from surgery.”

The term “recovery” defines a process of restoration to original condition. In addiction care the term “recovery” can actually carry a lot of stigma. The good news is you don’t have to use this term. In fact, another term that many use is “wellness.” For example, instead of the common saying, “my recovery date or my sobriety date is... ,” you may decide to say, “my wellness date is... .”

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines addiction recovery as:

“A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.”

How you want to define your process of improved health and well-being is up to you.

We know that sustained reduced substance use almost always requires changing old behaviors that have resulted in negative consequences. Your Peer Recovery Specialist will work with you, if you choose, to identify and discuss common behaviors that support or challenge your substance use goals.

Your Peer Recovery Specialist, who is in sustained recovery, will engage in discussions with you about the eight dimensions of wellness (Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, Career, Intellectual, Environmental, Financial, and Social), always moving forward at your pace.
