Important Update for Our Patients in Ohio and North Carolina

We have some important information to share with you; please read this announcement carefully.

We are writing to let you know about a change in our prescribing policy for patients in Ohio and North Carolina. Starting Monday, October 20, 2025, we will no longer be able to prescribe Subutex (buprenorphine without naloxone).

We know that this news may be frustrating, and we want you to know that we did not make this decision lightly. This change is based on the political and regulatory landscapes in Ohio and North Carolina that have created a significant barrier that makes it very difficult to prescribe this specific medication at this time.

Our top priority is to provide safe and effective care for all of our patients. We understand that in the past, Subutex was often prescribed in cases of a severe, life-threatening naloxone allergy or for patients who were pregnant or breastfeeding. However, life-threatening naloxone allergies are very rare and the latest research has shown that Suboxone (buprenorphine with naloxone) is safe and highly effective for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. For most people, Suboxone (buprenorphine with naloxone) is the best option, and we will continue to prescribe it.

What's Next for Patients on Subutex?

Please note that we will be discontinuing Subutex prescriptions on a rolling 90-day basis. This means that after you have discussed the change with a Boulder Care provider, you may continue to receive Subutex for up to 90 days to help you with this transition.

The length of each prescription during this transition period will be based on your individual situation, which you can discuss with your provider at your next visit. Per Boulder policy, the longest prescription we can send to the pharmacy at one time is 28 days.

If you are currently prescribed Subutex, you have a couple of options:

You can meet with one of our providers to talk about other medications we can prescribe that are available to you through Boulder Care.

At Boulder Care, we can provide:

  • Generic Buprenorphine with naloxone tablets
  • Generic Buprenorphine with naloxone films
  • Brand Name Suboxone films (dependent upon insurance coverage)
  • Zubsolv (buprenorphine with naloxone) tablets

You can also choose to find a different provider outside of Boulder Care who may be able to prescribe the medication you prefer.

Your Boulder care team can:

  • Provide local resources for those who wish to transfer their care.
  • Offer comprehensive support and education regarding Suboxone’s effectiveness.
  • Openly address concerns, fostering a safe environment.
  • Connect patients with Peer Support for more assistance.

Boulder’s mission is to reduce harm, eliminate stigma, and expand access to care. Despite shifting regulations, our commitment to supporting patients throughout their recovery journey remains steadfast.

Thank you for your understanding. We are committed to continuing to support you on your journey to recovery.
